British Exploring Society is a world class youth development charity with a unique heritage, founded on the belief that challenging experiences in wild and remote locations can transform lives, empowering and equipping young people with the courage, skills, resilience and determination to make the most of their future.
Its vision is for all young people to be able to contribute confidently in the world. It support equal access to challenging learning and adventure in the wilderness as an unbeatable preparation for adult life. Their mission is to grow and celebrate a diverse, inclusive community of young people with the skills, resilience and determination to make lasting positive decisions in their own lives, and to deliver community benefit and positive environmental change.
As BES continue to enable young people to experience wild and remote locations, it acknowledges that they have a critical responsibility to do so sustainably. It their 10-year strategy – A Wild Future – was published in 2021. It guides the operational plans, decision-making, and measurement of progress. In A Wild Future, it was agreed that all critical decisions will be subject to a ‘sustainability filter’. They challenge themselves on whether ‘BES have passed the test in thier commitment to carbon management and to the standards, benchmarks and policies and commitment to progress that they have set themselves.’ Forest Carbon is proud to partner with BES, in enabling the support of UK nature based projects, as a key part of that journey.
